2.4MW Solar Farm Commissioned in Bong County

GGC Inc's renewable energy division has successfully commissioned a 2.4 megawatt solar farm in Bong County, marking a significant milestone in Liberia's transition to clean, affordable energy. The facility, located 12 kilometres outside Gbarnga, is now supplying electricity to the national grid and directly powering over 3,000 households in the surrounding area.

Technical Overview

The solar farm comprises 6,200 photovoltaic panels arranged across 8 hectares of land, with a battery storage system capable of holding 4.8MWh of energy. The storage capacity ensures continuous supply during periods of low solar irradiance, providing a reliable baseload that complements Liberia's existing hydroelectric generation.

GGC partnered with a Ghanaian engineering firm for the technical design and panel installation, while all civil works — including site preparation, access roads, and perimeter fencing — were completed by GGC's in-house construction team using local labour.

Community Impact

The commissioning ceremony was attended by representatives from the Liberia Electricity Corporation, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and community leaders from the three districts served by the facility. The project is expected to reduce electricity costs for connected households by an average of 35% compared to diesel generator alternatives.

  • 3,000+ households with reliable electricity access
  • 35% average reduction in electricity costs
  • 6,200 photovoltaic panels across 8 hectares
  • 4.8MWh battery storage for continuous supply

Looking Ahead

GGC plans to expand the facility to 5MW capacity by 2028, subject to grid infrastructure upgrades currently being planned by the Liberia Electricity Corporation. A second solar installation in Nimba County is also under feasibility assessment.

The Bong County solar farm represents GGC's largest single energy investment to date and demonstrates the company's commitment to building sustainable infrastructure that delivers long-term economic benefits for Liberian communities.
